India Ink and Watercolor

I tried my hand at India Ink art. Fascinating and completely different from watercolor. Watercolor takes longer to dry and the color can be lifted. Not so with India ink. It dries fast and cannot be lifted.

The style is a looser form of painting technique requiring the artist to first lay down an outline of water then dropping in the ink, letting it flow throughout. Once it is dry, or even while it is semi dry, darker ink can be added for finer detail. See the darker patches on the cat below as an example.

I bought my India Ink at Blick Art in Pittsburgh and will provide links below to the two colors that I purchased:

It was an interesting medium to work with and I will likely incorporate the technique in select future paintings.

In combination with the ink, I painted the grass in the black cat painting using Daniel Smith Cobalt Turquoise and the legs on the stork with Winsor Newton Burnt Sienna. I also added sea salt to the wet paper on the whale to create visual texture. What fun!

Art: it’s all about exploring! Dream on and Explore on!
