Old Tree Ink & Colorwash

It’s ‘Inktober’, a time when many artists get out their permanent ink pens to create sketches and perhaps add a little color wash to their drawings.

I first learned of ink and color wash from Peter Sheeler. In fact, I loved his art so much I bought one of his small sketches a few years ago. It now sits framed on the buffet in my dining room where I see it first thing every morning.

Seeing a simple tree photo taken by photographer Hennie Stander via Unsplash took me back to my childhood home, and so out came my micron pens while I set to work. Painting suggestions came via De Masi.

Painted on a 9 x 12 inch cold pressed watercolor block by Arches and using only three watercolors in the following hues: Burnt Sienna, French Ultramarine, and Winsor Violet.

I used various sizes of Sakura Micron Archival waterproof pens to first lay down the sketch.
