Three Horses

I recently came across a National Geographic article about three horses found in the ruins of Pompeii. It spoke of how these three horses were found saddled up as if ready to ride out, but they never made it. I would like to imagine them making it out of there, running hard and fast as the ashes rained down behind them.

Provided is a short 1 minute clip of the archeological dig in Pompeii where they were found:

My painting of three horses running were painted using only 4 colors: Paynes Grey, Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna and Raw Sienna. I did however, glaze over the reins with pearlized black and used Pearlescent white glaze over portions of the light sections of the horses once it was finished and completely dry. It was painted on Arches watercolor 300 lb weight paper in size 10 x 14 inches.

Painting and thinking of Pompeii reminded me of our trip there in 2019. I wear my cameo ring from Cellini Galleries that David bought for me before we left Pompeii. I cherish it and the memories of our visit. The people were charming and our tour guide for Pompeii was a most distinguished and charismatic old fellow. We loved him.

What a fascinating, marvelous place. Until we meet again, dear Italy.

Love

Helen
