Lioness at Rest

Watercolor painting. Reference photo and painting tutorial via De Masi

I needed peace this week. Desperately needed peace and I found it during the quiet of my mornings. Our family recently discovered what was ailing our father, dementia, to be more specific, Lewy Body Dementia.

Now we try to find comfort where we can for him and for ourselves.

The peaceful repose of a majestic lioness gave me the peace I so desperately sought this week. I did not take any progress photos. I simply taped paper down to my drawing board, pulled out my graphite pencil to draw her outline and then each morning watched her come to life.

I haven’t painted in awhile, the summer at first had been filled with travel and travel journals and then once we were home, it was first one doctor visit followed by many for Dad.

This week was more normal for me, filling the bird feeders outside my office window, getting out my paints, swirling my brushes in a mason jar of water, wetting my paper and watching the colors spread.

I used the Schmincke Granulation watercolors suggested by Louise. I bought the trio super granulation Tundra series. I enjoyed using them. For me, seeing the pigments separate and take on a life of their own on the paper is magical.

Magic was indeed needed this week.

Here is a link to Blick Art where I purchased mine, but you can find them also on Amazon, Jackson’s Art Supply and many other sites.

Peace,

Helen
