Guinea Fowl

Guinea fowl, aka the barnyard ‘watchdog’. A very territorial bird, they will chase away anything and everything from their space.

Case in point, I went to list a house in the country. I measured the inside rooms, took my photographs, then headed out back to the garage apartment.

I proceeded to take measurements and photograph the garage and apartment space. Next, I headed outside to photograph the farm.

But, as I went down the steps, I heard the loudest ruckus.

A flock of odd looking birds came screaming around the corner of the garage and chased me straight back inside. Heart pounding, I got in just in time and slammed the door shut!

Guinea Fowl

What in the world were these creatures? I grew up on a farm but I had never seen anything like this.

I took a photo of them and sent it to a farmer friend and he said, “Why, them’s guineas!” And yes they are protecting the place!

The owners had already moved, the house was empty, and these fowl belonged to the neighboring farm, but they decided they liked this place too.

Nothing to do but wait until they went back up over the ridge.

I watched from the windows and soon enough they headed back up over the hill.

As soon as they did, I made a beeline for the back door of the house.

Painting this proud bird brought that day back to memory and I had to chuckle to myself as I painted.

You never know what you are going to run into when you go to list a house for sale.
