Dark Haired Beauty

Growing up, I always wanted curly hair. But alas, I have hair straight as a board and nearly impossible to curl. So, I thought I would try my hand at painting curly hair. I found the portrait of this gorgeous dark haired model via the Emily Olson Art website. In the YouTube link below Emily takes you through a lesson on how to paint curly hair.

For my reference photo I used a photo taken by photographer Jhermans using a Canon EOS REBEL camera. It is free to download once you sign up for an account on pxhere.com. However, you can view it here without signing up if you prefer:

From Pencil to Painting

Painted on Arches 9 x 12 Watercolor Paper, 300lb using the following watercolors:

Indigo

Burnt Sienna

Burnt Umber

Alizarin Crimson

Transparent Orange

White Gouache

Painting this beauty also gave me additional practice on painting faces. I have another portrait or two in mind that I would like to paint also, so stay tuned for those in the future. But in the meantime, I may paint a nature scene, or perhaps another beach scene. Who knows?

Till next time,

Helen
