Eastern Kingbird

The Eastern Kingbird is a robin sized flycatcher native to the Americas. At the 1:30 minute mark in this YouTube video, you see their nest in an old fencepost which I thought was cool. The video is short at less than 2 minutes, but has a few interesting facts about the Eastern Kingbird.

I came to paint the Eastern Kingbird via Louise De Masi. She did a graphite and paint study of the bird. I chose not do a graphite study, I simply did a sketch and moved straight into watercolor. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzeDHgPVDF0&t=6s

Painted on Arches 300 lb. 10 x 14 watercolor pad using the following watercolors:

Burnt Sienna

French Ultramarine

Winsor Violet

The reference photo I used for my painting can be found on Unsplash and was taken by photographer Pete Nuij. A link to the photo for free download is attached to the bottom of the photo.

Happy Birding!
