Best Friends at the Beach
Be grateful for good friends, hot sun, and clear water.
Remember childhood? Remember how you could spend a day without worries, just you and your best friend? I remember days like that, my play days were filled with cousins and siblings. I remember a particular day when we were making mud pies. I remember that day especially because I had some explaining to do. One of the cousins went home crying to his mother, telling her that I was making mud pies and he didn't want to eat them. I had to explain to my parents that I wasn't really going to make him eat them, it's just 'play pretend'! And then of course I had to wash up all of Moms pie tins that I had taken from the kitchen, ha!
Seeing this photo took me back to those simple, carefree play days. So, I thought I would paint something a bit out of my comfort zone by painting these little children at the beach. I usually paint wildlife, birds, flowers, animals, and pets but I started following another watercolor artist and this is a tutorial that she spoke about recently on YouTube. I have wanted to learn more about skin tone, gesture, scenes and emotions, and this was the perfect opportunity. Her shortened demo is below:
I got so excited that I forgot to take a beginning progress photo. I was over halfway finished before I realized my misstep. However, I did show my finished painting to my husband and he liked it so much that he wrote a beautiful poem about it. Of course he might be a bit biased, but his poem is indeed lovely. I am also looking forward to seeing more of his photos and reminiscing about our trip to Greece. He is sorting through those now. And speaking of best friends... yes, he is my best friend.
It's another cold and snowy day here in WV. I don't know about you, but I am looking forward to planning summer visits with dear friends and family.
