American Goldfinch-Botanical Garden

The local Botanical Garden in Morgantown provides our family with so much enjoyment. Whenever you are in WV, the Morgantown area specifically, take a minute to check it out. I think the following YouTube video shows the beauty that you will find in this wild and wonderful botanic garden. Recently I was asked to create bird paintings for the children's educational/interpretative series. The American Goldfinch is the first one I attempted. The bright yellow of this bird reminded me of a shiny new spring day. It was such a warm painting to create on a cold and snowy morning.

I followed an online tutorial by Emily Olson which can be found by following this link:

Colors used in this painting were:

Transparent Orange, Burnt Umber, Indigo, Sap Green, Ultramarine Blue, Lemon Yellow and Lamp Black. I will be working on the Red Bellied Woodpecker next.

So, now on to the next painting project, the Red Bellied Woodpecker. I have a reference photo, now to start the sketch...

Feel free to share your bird photos, sketches, and paintings with me. I would love to see them. I just heard of a new instructor this morning via Judith at Artistcoveries. You can find her blog here:

I am always looking for new reference photos so feel free to share yours with me. Helping each other... it makes the world a better place.

Enjoy this beautiful day,

Helen
